The district of Raebareli was created by the British in 1858, is named after its headquarters town. Tradition has it that the town was founded by the Bhars and was known as Bharauli or Barauli which in course of time got changed into Bareli. The prefix, Rae repesents ,Rai, the common title of the Kayasths who were masters of the town for a considerable period of time.In the early 20th century, the town was an important centre of trade, and muslin and cotton cloth were woven.The city is famous as a political bastion of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
As of 2001 India census Rae Bareli had a population of 169,285. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Rae Bareli has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 63%. In Rae Bareli, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Raebareli has a large middle class and affluent population. Education is placed at the top priority by the locals. The combination of the above two factors resulted in the establishment of some quality educational institutions
